Haori-hakama is the most formal kimono for men. A haori is like a jacket worn on top of the kimono. Five white family crests are woven into it. The locations of the five family crests are at the center of the back of the haori and at both the front and back of each sleeve. Hakama is a pair of long pleated loose-fitting trousers. It is worn over the kimono, which completes the formal ensemble for men. The men's formal kimono is in a solid color and does not have any pattern. Interestingly, men's nagajyuban, an underkimono, which is likely never seen, has a very stunning design on its back.
The nagajyuban in the Japan House kimono collection is blue with the design of a black hawk and pine tree. Both the hawk and pine are auspicious symbols in Japan. The color of the formal haori is also black, and the hakama for the formal attire is called sendaihira.
